More than 45% of people in North Carolina own a firearm, including a man named Jonathan L.
For more than 16 years, Jonathan worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation, in the Sign Division of the Traffic Services Unit.
While working one day, Jonathan noticed a man trying to steal a work truck.
In an attempt to stop the man, Jonathan drew his concealed firearm.
“Don’t get in the truck, fool!” Jonathan yelled.
But the carjacker didn’t listen, instead he jumped in the truck and tried to drive off.
“Get out of the way, he is going to run into us!” Jonathan yelled to a group of bystanders.
That’s when Jonathan fired several shots at the carjacker.
The criminal then sped forward in the truck and hit Jonathan.
Tragically, Jonathan died at the hospital from injuries sustained when he was hit by the truck.
The carjacker was arrested a short time later and charged with first-degree murder.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation provided a statement.
“He was a dedicated, 16-year employee of the Department, working for the Sign Division of the Division 6 Traffic Services unit. Jonathan was greatly admired and will be sincerely missed.”
There is no question that Jonathan died a hero.
Who knows how many bystanders could have been run over had Jonathan not intervened?
While Jonathan fired several shots to stop the carjacker, I don’t know if he emptied his firearm or not, but he did what he could to stop the criminal.
But you may want to consider increasing the capacity of your concealed carry firearm…
This way, in the event you need to engage with a large target like a vehicle, or multiple enemies in a firefight, you have the ammo capacity to stay in the battle.
There are several ways to add extra ammo to your everyday carry setup, one being stashing an extra mag in your pocket.
But another option, one that’s often overlooked, is using a magazine with an extension.
What is a magazine extension?:
A gun magazine extension is an accessory that increases the ammo capacity of the magazine.
The accessory attaches to the bottom of the magazine and allows the magazine to hold more rounds than it was originally designed to do.
So, whether for self-defense or a long day at the shooting range, the extension gives you more ammo and reduces the number of times you have to reload.
Benefits of using a mag extension:
The obvious benefit of a magazine extension is that it will increase the ammo capacity for the firearm.
Depending on the specific extension, it will add between two to six additional rounds.
Most extensions can be added to factory mags, so you don’t have to replace your current magazines.
Another good thing about a mag extension is that it provides additional surface area for the shooter to get a hold on the magazine.
Plus, if you carry a magazine in a pouch or pocket, the extension can make it easier to grab since the magazine is longer.
In the same way that the mag extension makes it easier to load the gun, it can make it simpler to remove the mag.
For instance, if you need to reload and pull the mag out, there will be more to grab because of the extension.
And if the mag doesn’t fall or is stuck because of a malfunction, the extension makes it easier to tug the magazine out and reload a fresh mag.
Drawbacks to magazine extension:
The most noticeable drawback to a magazine extension is that it will increase the weight and balance of the firearm.
Even when the pistol is holstered on the hip, the extension could throw off the balance or even cause the firearm to sag away from the body.
Since the extension can change the weight of the gun, you should take time to practice at the shooting range with the magazine extension attached.
Get a feel for shooting the gun with the additional weight.
You want to adjust to the daily wearing, standing, and sitting with the firearm and the new extension.
Installing a magazine extension isn’t hard, but it can take some patience.
You will need to take apart the bottom of your factory magazine and install the extension – nothing too difficult.
But be careful with the small screws and springs.
The springs can fly around, and you don’t want to lose the small screws.
If you don’t trust yourself to do it, a gunsmith or local gun store could likely do it for you quickly and cheaply.
A magazine extension is definitely something to consider if you are worried about capacity.
Just remember, like any accessory, train with your firearm to ensure you are comfortable with the new feel.
