A sheriff’s deputy in Florida was responding to a disturbance call when he was injured by a homemade firearm.
The deputy was shot in the hand by a suspect with a homemade 12-gauge shotgun, known as a zip gun.
The suspect who made the homemade firearm was also injured by the gun and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The man was not involved in the initial call that led to the deputy responding, but for some reason, approached the deputy on a bicycle.
When the deputy asked if the man had anything illegal on him, the man took off his shirt and showed the deputy his homemade gun.
The deputy reached for the firearm and the suspect pulled away from him.
In that instant, the gun came apart and fired at the same time.
The deputy’s hand was severely injured, and he was taken to a nearby hospital.
The suspect was charged with multiple crimes.
When police examined the gun, they learned that it had two interlocking pieces of metal pipe that held a single shotgun shell.
The reality is there are some criminals who foolishly think they are qualified to make homemade guns.
Yet, if I am going to have a weapon for self-defense, I want to make sure it comes from a trusted company.
When I pull the trigger, I want it to go bang, not blow up in my hand.
And there’s no better place to see virtually any and every gun available than the SHOT Show.
I attended the 2024 show this year and got to see some of the latest weapons.
Here are a few of the guns that were featured at the 2024 SHOT Show that you might want to check out.
FN 509 CC Edge XL:
The latest pistol from FN is an in-between option for some of the company’s most popular pistols.
The Edge XL is a full-size pistol with a 17-round capacity, a 4.2-inch barrel, and a quick detach compensator.
It also has an optics mounting plate with a fiber optic front sight.
The Edge XL sells for $1,600 new.
Canik TTI Combat:
The Canik TTI is a polymer frame pistol with an aggressive grip texture.
It’s Canik’s first gun with a removable barrel compensator.
It has an optics-ready slide and a two-tone black and bronze finish.
The TTI was designed through a collaboration between Canik and Taran Tactical Innovations.
It’s a firearm with a price tag of $950.
Savage 110 Magpul Scout:
The Scout is more of a traditional rifle with a modern design.
The rifle has iron sights and is designed for quick reloading.
It also has a long-scope rail so you can choose an optic.
Or you can use the peep sight and front post if you don’t want an optic at all.
The rifle has an adjustable Magpul stock that has M-LOK slots on it for additional accessories.
The gun comes in a variety of calibers from 6.5 CM, .450 Bushmaster, and .308.
The Savage Magpul Scout starts at around $1,000.
Primary Weapon System URX:
Some folks will argue that the URX stole the show.
The gun is not yet available but when it hits the commercial market it will attract even more fans.
It operates on a gas piston system and has a smooth recoil.
The gun is completely ambidextrous and the stock collapses easily.
It also has M-LOK rails for plenty of accessories.
But what really sets the URX apart is that it’s one of the most modular guns ever created and can be converted to different calibers by the owner.
The 5.56 rifle can easily be converted to a .308 in just a few minutes.
It’s also designed to be stripped down by the owner with only one tool.
The URX will sell for around $2,500 when it hits the market. And it’s estimated that conversion kits will cost $500 each.
Now, for anyone who loves guns, SHOT Show is like going to Disneyland, and there isn’t enough time to see all the latest and greatest innovations.
But these are a few guns that will likely be popular this year and might be worth giving a look.
