Floating on a mattress with no food and just sewage to drink

Lakeita W. was a 20-year-old from the Lower Ninth Ward in Louisiana.

When Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29, 2005, Lakeita, her partner and their 9-month-old baby were trapped inside her parents’ house.

They spent two days in the sweltering attic as floodwater rose below them.

When the water dropped enough, they climbed out and found a floating mattress.

They spent a third night on that mattress, outside, with their baby.

A stranger in a canoe appeared and brought the family to dry ground.

If your water smells, looks cloudy, or comes from a source downstream of waste buildup, do not drink it without filtering and treating it first.

The reality is that garbage during emergencies shifts from a logistical headache to a direct pathway to disease within days.

Most people focus on food, water, and shelter, as they should.

But the preppers who think about their waste stream are the ones who sidestep the illness and pest problems that follow every major disaster.

Stock the bags, gloves, and odor control gear before the first pickup gets skipped.

Keep a packed emergency bag with contractor bags, nitrile gloves, N95 masks, and sanitation wipes so you can handle the mess the moment collection stops.

And ensure you have quality water filtration to keep yourself safe.
