On November 19th, 2018, a gunman arrived at Chicago’s Mercy Hospital and opened fire.
The target was the doctor, Tamara O, she was the ex-fiancé of the gunman.
The incident started in the parking lot when Tamara was confronted by the gunman.
The man demanded that Tamara return the engagement ring that he had given her.
When Tamara didn’t have the ring to give him, the gunman shot her six times in the parking lot.
After shooting Tamara, the gunman entered the hospital.
Police soon arrived and entered the hospital after him. During this time the gunman fired about 40 shots.
One of the responding police officers was fatally shot as was a pharmacy employee.
The gunman was also killed during the incident.
But miraculously, during the shooting, another police officer was struck by a bullet but wasn’t injured.
According to police, “He wasn’t actually struck in his body physically, but his holster was struck.”
You see, the officer was hit in the holster and the bullet embedded into the holster and gun.
There was a bullet-sized hole in the holster that was sitting on the officer’s right hip. The bullet then hit the officer’s gun just above the trigger.
Now, police didn’t reveal the exact brand or material of the holster that saved the officer.
But this is just one of many reasons why you don’t want to go cheap when it comes to gun holsters.
You want something that is strong and durable – something that might be able to stop a bullet.
These days there are always new materials and brands of holsters being produced.
And today, the trend is carbon fiber holsters.
So, here are some things you should know about carbon fiber holsters to help decide if you do or don’t want one.
What is carbon fiber?:
Carbon fiber is a material made of strands of carbon. It’s known for being strong and lightweight.
In many applications, carbon fiber is used as an added layer like an epoxy.
For instance, in the holster world carbon fiber is often added on polymer or Kydex holsters.
Carbon fiber can be used as a core material, but it would be very expensive and hard to mass produce.
So, when you see a carbon fiber holster it’s likely made of polymer or Kydex, then coated in carbon fiber.
Benefits of carbon fiber holsters:
Carbon fiber holsters have a sleek, high-tech, expensive look.
In addition, most carbon fiber holsters have a pattern finish that is scratch-resistant.
Plus, carbon fiber is incredibly strong and resistant to wear and tear.
And the carbon fiber finish will provide stiffness to the holster, which will help it maintain its shape even with repeated drawing and re-holstering.
For many people, the dual benefits of durability and sleek looks of a carbon fiber holster makes it appealing.
Drawbacks to carbon fiber:
One issue with carbon fiber holsters is that they can be more expensive due to the material and in-depth manufacturing process.
Depending on the exact holster, a quality option could cost upwards of $100.
Additionally, some carbon holsters can become brittle.
While the material is strong and durable, it doesn’t flex or give, making it more likely to break off.
So, if you are looking for a carbon fiber holster, consider brands such as Falco and We The People Holsters.
For everyday carry, it might be worth getting a carbon fiber holster for the durability and reduced weight.
Whatever holster you choose, your safety, comfort, and ability to execute the fundamentals of shooting are the most important factors in your decision.
